Zhongshan may be greener and more liveable than some of its neighbours but it still has its share of industry. Most of it, however, is scattered around the city in regionalised areas of specialisation. Guzhen, for example, is famous for lighting products, Shaxi for textiles and garments, Dayong for redwood furniture, Dongfeng for appliances, while the Zhongshan Torch Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone concentrates on IT and auto parts.
Zhongshan continues to promote regional specialisation outside the city limits through clustering, with some 40 industrial parks focused on packaging, medical science, and refined chemicals, among others.
Given its many assets, Zhongshan is well placed to grab a slice of the expo market, but its share remains relatively small compared to Guangzhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen. Most of Zhongshan’s big trade fairs take place late in the year, and these include the China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair, the China (Dayong) International Rosewood & Antique Furniture Fair, the Shaxi Casual Wear Festival, the China (Zhongshan) International Trade Fair, and the Zhongshan Trade Fair.
