The Xinhui Gudou Hot Spring Resort, which sits at the foot of the diminutive Gudou Mountain, claims to be the best such resort in Guangdong, and it is certainly one of the classiest operations in the region.
The resort covers a sprawling 100,000 sq m and has three hot-spring areas set in different styles: Tang dynasty, European, and Japanese. Guests have a choice of hotel accommodation or villas, which is as close to five-star as you can get outside of Jiangmen city.
A favored retreat for senior officials from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau, the resort offers the choice of private hot-spring bathing – we particularly recommend the Tang dynasty experience as a memorable treat.
The best time to experience the hot springs is at night, after a long, leisurely dinner. In the main area there is a stage where performances are held that will invariably leave you with plenty of “only in China” memories. Try jumping between pools with different temperatures, and don’t forget to explore the grounds for all the out-of-the-way pools. Some are mixed with herbal medicine. A massage afterwards on the hot stones is a sure-fire way to get a good night’s sleep.
This is not only a leisure resort, however. There are extensive conference facilities, with all the hi-tech gadgetry you could need for a big promotional event. It is obviously a good choice for company retreats. Just don’t forget the early morning wake-up call.
