There are many parks in Zhuhai that are not of the grassy kind. They range in size, and some are large by any standard: the Zhuhai National Level Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, for example, encompasses the 4.2-million-sq-m Nanping Science and Technology Industrial Park, the Sanzao Science and Technology Industrial Park, and the Xinqing Science and Technology Industrial Park, to name just three of its six zones. Meanwhile, the Wanshan Ocean Development Testing Zone aims to develop Zhuhai’s offshore islands, and in the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone imports are exempt from import tariffs, and value-added and consumption taxes. The most recent addition to Zhuhai’s business portfolio is the Cross-border Industrial Zone, which straddles southern Zhuhai and northern Macau.
Despite its superb beachside location, Zhuhai has not emerged as a major convention centre. An exception, however, is the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition, more commonly known as Air Show China, which takes place annually from late October to early November. Late May sees Zhuhai’s Automobile Product Fair take place.
There is an expatriate support network, called the Zhuhai International Association, which has a helpful website on both Zhuhai and Macau. Its members seem to have made the Money Bar on the Shuiwan Bar Street their own, and they are a very good starting point for getting to know the city.
