Guangzhou's per-capita GDP is estimated to have passed the US$10,000 mark in 2006, academics were quoted by the China Business News as saying.
Although per-capita GDP statistics depend on measurement of a city's official or actual population, leading to fluctuations across municipalities, the latest statistics would make Guangzhou the richest city in the mainland --and the first to reach the so-called "developed city" threshold set by the central government in its latest five-year plan.
According to the Guangzhou Academy of Social Science, in 2005, Guangzhou's per capita GDP was US$8,500, while Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen were 5,457, 7,600 and 7,300, respectively.
