Dongguan Sheraton Hotel, Dongguan

The Sheraton raised the bar for five-star accommodation in Dongguan when it opened three years ago. It is still
holding that bar aloft. From the moment you walk into the lobby – which must be the tallest in China – you realize the owner of this hotel knew what he was doing by bringing the first international hotel chain to Dongguan.

Unsurprisingly, the Sheraton was running at close to full occupancy for the last three months of 2005. It has the sublime “Sweet Sleeper” beds, the best Italian restaurant within two hours’ drive (simply called Luigi), and state-of-theart business meeting facilities to offer. The hotel also has a topnotch fitness centre, while a foot-massage club is located in the same building. The KTV nightclub, which is managed by an outside contractor, is famed throughout the country, never mind Dongguan.

There is not much else in Houjie by way of international restaurants and bars. A short drive away, however, is the
exclusive Harbour Plaza Golf Club. If you are lucky enough to know someone who has a membership, it can be a good place to go for lunch (see golfing options on following pages).
