Inside the Pearl River Delta |
Syrian delight: Oriental Palace RestaurantOne of Guangzhou’s greatest attractions is the diversity of its international community. Traders have been coming to the city from all over the world for centuries, and it shows in the makeup and variety of its restaurants. Among the finest are those from countries in the Middle East. About a mile away from the China Hotel is the Orient Palace restaurant, a welcome addition to the dining scene in Guangzhou since it opened a year ago. It doesn’t look like much from outside. But once you pass inside, your eyes – and nostrils – are easily arrested. The décor makes you feel as if you have walked into an Aladdin movie (see picture at left), while the scents swirling around you promise an enriching cultural experience. The menu could take hours to get through, however, so it’s best to ask for recommendations. The shish kebabs were a must-eat for us, as was the hummus. Another favourite was the mixed meat platter, while the vegetarian at our table found plenty to digest, such as cheese puff rolls and a long list of fresh vegetables. It’s a fun alternative to the usual fare at Western and Chinese restaurants, and the people who come here seem to be regulars. A meal for four came to about 300 yuan. But be prepared: this is a good Muslim restaurant, and no alcohol is served. Guangzhou:
