Wong Tai Sin Temple

Legendary Wong Tai-sin learned the art of turning cinnabar (the principle ore in mercury) into a cure-all from an immortal when he was 15 years old. That was in the fourth century. His fame endured, and followers built a temple in his memory in Guangzhou’s Fangcun District in 1899. One follower moved to Hong Kong, and rebuilt the temple on the slopes of Lion Rock in 1921, now the heart of urban Kowloon. It was a good thing he did, because the original temple in Fangcun was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution; thanks to the Hong Kong model, the original was rebuilt in 1999. The complex includes a main hall with an 18-meter ceiling and a 3.2-meter bronze statue weighing three tonnes. There are additional halls for Confucius, the God of Money, Kuanyin, and the Chinese zodiacs.
