Inside the Pearl River Delta |
Yuexiu ParkLegend has it that five immortals riding rams brought sheaves of rice to a barren Guangzhou, saving the people from famine. When the immortals left, the rams turned into stone, and the statue of them at the heart of Yuexiu Park is by common consent the city’s symbol – Guangzhou is also known in Chinese as Yangcheng, or “City of Rams”. A green oasis in the heart of smoggy Guangzhou, Yuexiu is one of the city’s oldest parks. With five hills and three artificial lakes, it has boating, fishing, swimming, body-building, table tennis, and outdoor ballroom dancing. There are also children’s playgrounds, landscaped gardens, a barbecue area, an amusement park, a grassy meadow, and waterfalls. A collection of statues based on Chinese idioms and fables grace the leafy banks of Beixu Lake. Other highlights include the Graveyard of Emperor Shaowu, the Qianyi Pottery Garden, the Guangzhou Arts Gallery, the Round Tower, and the four-story Zhenhai Tower, featuring green-tiled roofs and vermilion walls.
